State halts railyard funding   
Just as work hits high gear, the downtown Sacramento railyard redevelopment is threatened with stoppage.

Construction workers are lowered on a cherry picker after finishing their work Friday on a bridge that will extend Fifth Street from downtown into the now-landlocked Sacramento railyard site. The development of the railyard is threatened by a cutoff of state funds to developer Thomas Enterprises.

Thomas Enterprises, which hopes to turn the moribund 240-acre railyard site into a thriving extension of downtown boasting housing, offices and restaurants, is at risk of losing the property for failing to make good on its loans.
Sacramento County missing $17 million in payroll taxes   
About $17 million that Sacramento County entrusted to a payroll services company is missing, and the county has called on the FBI and the U.S. attorney's office to investigate.
